The ambiguous ending of the original series, broadcast in 1995 and 1996, left some viewers and critics confused and unsatisfied. The final two episodes were possibly the most controversial segments of an already controversial series and were received as flawed and incomplete by many. Director received from some fans dissatisfied with the ending.
However, Anno and assistant director Kazuya Tsurumaki defended the artistic integrity of the finale. Gainax launched the project to create a film ending for the series in 1997, first releasing as a condensed character-based recap and re-edit of the TV series ( Death) and the first half of the new ending ( Rebirth, which was originally intended to be the full ending, but could not be finished due to budget and time constraints). The project was completed later in the year and released as The End of Evangelion. Retrieved December 22, 2016.

Sight and Sound (2003). 'The stunning originality of these final episodes cannot be overstated the series deals with these elements in breathtakingly creative ways to create a unique and memorable vision of inner and outer collapse, and, perhaps, renewal.
It should be noted that many viewers were outraged by the two final episodes. Expecting a more conventional end-of-the-world scenario, fans were baffled and indignant that, instead of outward explosions and satisfying combat, the cataclysmic struggle occurred wholly in the character's mind.' 'Lately due to the ending of episodes #25 and #26, some people started watching Evangelion. They were not anime fans. In fact many of them are females and they tell me that they really enjoyed episode #25, objectively. Most anime fans are furious. I understand their anger. I can't help laughing when hard-core anime fans say that we did a very lousy job, with intentional negligence. No we didn't.
No staff members did a lousy job. In fact, every member at Gainax gave more energy than anybody can imagine. I feel sad that those fans couldn't see our efforts. Personally I think the original TV ending we showed ended up beautifully.' Hideaki Anno, Protoculture Addicts 43.
'My opinion was, 'Why don't we show them the entire process including our breakdown.' You know — make it a work that shows everything including our inability to create a satisfactory product. I figured that, 'In 10 years or so, if we look back on something that we made while we were drunk out of our minds, we wouldn't feel bad even if the quality wasn't so good.'

SPOILER. First-time Watcher Last episode: 30 Rei's enter, 1 Rei leaves. We kinda know what happened with the Second Impact / Adam / EVAs? Still confusing, but better than nothing. Asuka's pretty much out of the fight right now mentally, and Shinji's not doing much better. I am now at least partially rooting for Gendo, since it sounds like SEELE's idea of success is for most of humanity to be killed. But honestly I'm all in on team Misato.
This whole opening is really tough to watch. Turning to despair finding her mother's corpse.
Flash forward to the present, and finding out about Kaji leads her to the we've seen. She looks malnourished here.
Is this her childhood home? I was trying to figure out where she was., don't ruin your life because of this shithead. Is every single adult in this show sex-crazy?., HE ACTUALLY EXISTS!! The name 'Kaworu' rolls off the tongue like a pile of garbage, let's see if this guy is more than his suggests. Umm, does Shinji have the hots for Kaworu?
These blushes came out of nowhere. I get that he's a sexually confused kid, but that'd be a quick turnaround. Well, guess so. This show has always been mature, but they let it get this episode. Guess I'm all in on the Shinworu ship?
The Beginning and the End, or 'Knockin' on Heaven's Door'. IT'S HERE BOYZ. Let's fuck shit up. Was this from that burn saving Rei? Or something else?.
So Kaworu is the soul of Adam? And that's the body of Adam in Gendo? I AM CONFUZZLED. He's the Final Messenger? And Rei is his counterpart somehow???.
Asuka has of most broken character to a whole new level. Misato's the only one who's come back from that level of mental instability.
The soul in 02 is completely closed off, did we ever figure out who it was? Asuka's mom is all I can come up with, but then why could they connect so well before?
Shouldn't they hate each other?. So that's NOT Adam in the Dogma, it's Lilith? My theology knowledge is too small to know wtf they're talking about this episode.
Dear GOD they. No dialogue, just religious hymns in the background. Shinji's still a broken kid. His last boyfriend. I'M ALL OUT OF IDEAS. The 'last Angel' is now deadzo? The biggest ship of the show was christened and sank in a single episode, RIP Shinworu.
To be completely honest I have no clue what's happening plotwise, even though supposedly everything's been 'explained'. Rei, Kaworu, and the EVAs are all made from Adam. But now that Lilith and Lilim and Rei and Kaworu are all some sort of mystical religious beings, I really am struggling to understand how everything fits together.
I am really enjoying it and freaking the hell out during every episode, but I think the show is having too much fun being as cryptic as possible XD It sounds like SEELE had some control over when Angels were 'sent', but I don't know how much. And WHY though. That's my main question about everything in this whole show; WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?!? Is the end gonna be a metaphor for 'shit happens'? Speaking of the end, there's still 2 more episodes, and I believe we're watching both before tomorrow?
No more Angels, SEELE still has its own plans, Gendo now has something growing in his hand (Adam?). This is gonna be a REAL messy ending, isn't it.
